Along with a preview update for Windows 11 (KB5018496), Microsoft has also released a “type D” update for Windows 10. Since this is an optional update, it needs to be installed manually; either through Windows Update or standalone installers that are given in the downloads section below.
This is KB5018482 which is applicable for Windows 10 22H2, 21H2, 21H1, and 20H2. Although Microsoft does not state that the update is applicable to Windows 10 2022 Update, we have tested it out, and it is offered to this version as well via Windows Update.

KB5018482 does not include any significant new features for the operating system, but many improvements and fixes. It addresses an issue that prevented the OS from upgrading via Windows Update, and it also addresses a few issues relating to Direct3D 9, improving your gaming experience.
We would also like to highlight that KB5018482 was also released to the Release Preview channel last week for the Insiders on Windows 10 21H2 but only upgraded the build to 19044.2192. This is common practice for Microsoft as a way of making an update safer through iterations when the update becomes publically available in next month’s Patch Tuesday.

Fixes and Improvements in KB5018482
Since all 4 versions of Windows 10 have the same functional core, installing KB5018482 will make the same fixes on all of them. Here are the new fixes in this update:
- An issue that affects Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) authentication hardening is fixed. It automatically raised the authentication level for all non-anonymous activation requests from DCOM clients to RPC_C_AUTHN_LEVEL_PKT_INTEGRITY.
- Another DCOM issue that affects the Remote Procedure Call Service (rpcss.exe) is also addressed. It raised the authentication level to RPC_C_AUTHN_LEVEL_PKT_INTEGRITY instead of RPC_C_AUTHN_LEVEL_CONNECT if RPC_C_AUTHN_LEVEL_NONE is specified.
- An issue that causes an OS upgrade to stop responding, and then it fails, is now fixed.
- An issue that affects the Microsoft Azure Active Directory (AAD) Application Proxy connector is taken care of. It could not retrieve a Kerberos ticket on behalf of the user.
- An issue that affects the font of three Chinese characters is fixed. When you formatted these characters as bold, the width size was wrong.
- An issue that affects Microsoft Direct3D 9 games is addressed. The graphics hardware stopped working if the hardware did not have a native Direct3D 9 driver.
- Some graphical issues in games have been addressed that use Microsoft D3D9 on some platforms.
- An issue that affects Microsoft Edge when it is in IE Mode is fixed. The titles of pop-up windows and tabs were wrong.
- Another issue that affects Microsoft Edge IE mode is also fixed. It stopped you from opening web pages. This occurred when you enabled Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) and you did not configure Network Isolation policies.
- An issue that might cause an application to stop responding is now fixed. This occurred when the input queue overflowed.
- An issue that affects Input Method Editors (IME) from Microsoft and third parties is addressed. They stopped working when you closed the IME window.
- An issue that affects the lasso tool in a graphics editing program is fixed.
- An issue that affects Miracast advertisements has been fixed. This issue occurred on Surface Hub devices under certain conditions.
- An issue that affects some drivers has been addressed. They used more power when you played hardware-protected Digital Rights Management (DRM) content.
- An issue that affects .MSI files has been taken care of. Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) would ignore them when you disabled script enforcement.
- An issue that affects a remote desktop Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) scenario is fixed. The session would use the wrong time zone.
- It updates the Windows kernel vulnerable driver blocklist that is in the DriverSiPolicy.p7b file. This update also ensures that the blocklist is the same across Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- It makes Microsoft compliant with US Government (USG) version 6 revision 1.
- It stops the start of daylight saving time in Jordan at the end of October 2022. The Jordan time zone will permanently shift to the UTC + 3 time zone.
With these improvements, there is also a known issue with the update.
Known Issues
An issue with the standalone (clean) installation of Windows 10 with this update is causing Microsoft Edge Legacy to be removed. However, it is not being replaced by the new Chromium-based Edge.
This occurs only when Windows has a custom offline media or an ISO image installed that does not include the 29th March 2021 SSU update. Microsoft suggests that you either install the March SSU update through slipstreaming or simply update an existing OS through Windows Update, so you will not be facing this issue.
Alternatively, you can simply download and install the new Microsoft Edge if you have already encountered this problem.

Windows Update
To install this update via Windows Update, you need to be running Windows 10 version 22H2, 21H2, 21H1, or 20H2 (Enterprise or Education editions). To check your version of the operating system, type in winver in the Run Command box and press Enter.
Once ensured you have the right OS version, perform the following steps to install KB5018482:

Rollback/Remove Windows 10 Cumulative Update
If you do not wish to keep the installed update for some reason, you can always roll back to the previous build of the OS. However, this can only be performed within the next 10 days after installing the new update.
To roll back after 10 days, you will need to apply this trick.
Cleanup After Installing Windows Updates
If you want to save space after installing Windows updates, you can run the following commands one after the other in Command Prompt with administrative privileges:
