There are two popular ways to access your Gmail account. One is from a web browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The second one is from your mobile app. The Gmail mobile app comes pre-installed on Android smartphone and can be configured automatically when you sign-in to your device using a Google ID.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy phone (Android) and use Gmail app to manage my emails. Recently I stopped getting Gmail notifications of new mails on my Android phone. Since it’s important to get notifications of my important emails, I had to troubleshoot and fix this problem immediately.

This article will document the way I solved this issue. If you are also having Gmail notifications not working issues, I have added steps for enabling notifications in Android as well as in a Windows 10 browser or an iPhone.

Gmail notifications not working on Android phone solution

Gmail is the most popular (and arguably the best) email app for configuring emails on an Android device. This is because it comes pre-installed with almost all Android phones, be it Samsung, Galaxy Note, Huawei, Oppo or Redmi. The app shows gmail notifications for new emails on the phone.

Since people are always on the go, it can be quite frustrating when you find out that you have been waiting for an email that the sender had sent out an hour ago, but your phone failed to notify you about it. If you are an Android user, here are a few tips and tricks you can use to ensure that you never miss an email again. You need to follow the exact same steps given below as they worked well for me.

  1. Open the Gmail app on your Android phone.

  9. Repeat steps 4 through 8 for the remaining email accounts in the Gmail app.
  10. Now that the settings have been adjusted from within the Gmail app, it’s time to configure the device. Drop down the Notification Panel from the top of the screen to ensure that the Battery Saver is switched off. It is often the reason why the Gmail app fails to push any notifications. However, if you wish to keep it on, then you will need to exclude the Gmail app from optimizing itself to conserve battery.

Fix Gmail notification settings on Windows 10

Users have set up their Gmail accounts according to their own preferences. Some use a regular web browser, while others are more comfortable with other email clients. Here is how you can ensure that you receive desktop notifications for your inbound emails as soon as they are received in your email application or in the browser.

  1. Click on the gear icon in the top-right corner and then click See all settings.

Gmail notification settings in iOS Not Working Solution

The steps involved in troubleshooting notification settings in the Gmail app on an iOS device are very much like Android. Follow the guide below to enable push notifications on an iOS device:

  1. Launch the Gmail application and click on the Menu button (3 lines) in the top-left corner. From there, go to Settings.
  2. On the next screen, select the account you want to fix the notification settings of.
  3. Now navigate to Notifications and then select All emails.
  4. Now go to the device’s settings and check if the Gmail application is allowed in the Notifications section.

You should now be able to receive regular notifications for all your emails. For more information on how to troubleshoot Gmail notifications, visit this page from Google.

Closing words

Emails are important to people; otherwise, they would be using the regular messengers to communicate. Hence, people are dependent on their devices to push instant notification as soon as they receive an email. Having access to your emails on-the-go is a blessing, but only until you know that you have got them.

Therefore, rectifying these settings on your device is important, especially if they have been affected by recent updates.

On Android take a look into labels, because mostly labels are the problem when not getting Gmail notifications.

Still not getting notifications for any email except Primary. I’ve been through the notification settings a dozen times over the last few months, and changed the battery settings based on the above. Checked my phone an hour later and three emails had come in (Promotions and Updates) without notification. Pixel 3, Android 11
