Windows 11 Builds 22622.590 & 22621.590 (KB5017846) Retracts Direct Share To OneDrive

Microsoft has released updates to the Windows 11 Beta channel, which is KB5017846. installing this update will increment your operating system’s build to 22622.590 or 22621.590, depending upon which group your machine is a part of.

These updates do not introduce any new features, but makes several changes to enhance the user experience. Microsoft has retracted the ability to share local system files directly to OneDrive which was built into the Windows share window, introduced in Build 22622.436. Microsoft says that this is only temporary and will hopefully be reintroduced in a future flight.

If you have been subscribed to the Beta channel for some time, then you would already know that Microsoft split the Insiders into 2 groups: One group receives the updates with the new features already enabled (22622) and the other group receives the updates with the features disabled by default (22621).

Many other fixes and improvements have also been made. Let us see what those are and also look into the known issues with this flight before learning how to install this update.

Reminder: The users who landed in the group with new features disabled by default (Build 22621) can check for updates manually and choose to install the update that will have the features enabled (Build 22622).

New in Build 22622.590 Only

The following fixes and improvements apply to Windows 11 Build 22622.590:

• [General]
  • An issue causing the Control Panel to not launch from the Start menu, Search, or if pinned to the taskbar has been fixed.
  • As mentioned above, Microsoft has disabled the ability to share a local file directly to OneDrive using the built-in Windows share window.
• [File Explorer]
  • An issue causing a small percentage of Insiders to experience repeated explorer.exe crashes after attempting to access certain folders has now been fixed.
  • As a one-time change to help people find their folders with the navigation pane updates, if the default folders pinned to File Explorer’s navigation pane had been unpinned, they will be re-pinned after upgrading.
  • An issue where if File Explorer was open when you switched between light and dark mode, you could end up with some unreadable text / UI showing the wrong color, is now fixed.
  • An issue where the New / Sort / View / etc buttons in the command bar could become noticeably clipped vertically after increasing your text scaling in Accessibility Settings has been addressed.
  • The search box background should no longer unexpectedly have a dark background when you’re using light mode.
  • If you move the keyboard focus to the tab row (using F6), pressing the arrow keys to move the keyboard focus within the row will now include setting focus to the close button within the tab.
  • If File Explorer is maximized and the taskbar is set to autohide, hovering your mouse on the bottom of the screen should now actually bring up the taskbar.
  • A memory leak was happening when closing File Explorer windows is now fixed.
  • A GDI objects leak when resizing the navigation pane in File Explorer, which could potentially lead to content in File Explorer not rendering correctly over time for Insiders who resized the navigation pane frequently, has been addressed.
• [Taskbar]
  • The taskbar overflow flyout should now follow your accent color like the rest of the taskbar does when “Show accent color on Start and taskbar” is enabled under Settings >> Personalization >> Colors.
  • The apps in the taskbar overflow flyout should now be in the correct order when using an Arabic or Hebrew display language.
  • When the taskbar is center aligned and full, the widgets entry point will now collapse to a shorter width to give you a little more room on the taskbar.
  • A couple of issues related to the taskbar overflow which could lead to sporadic explorer.exe crashes are now fixed.

New in Build 22622.590 and 22621.590 Both

The following fixes apply to both the builds in the Beta channel:

• An issue that affects cldflt.sys is now fixed, which previously caused a bugcheck when it is used with Microsoft OneDrive.
• An issue where robocopy fails to set a file to the right modified time when using the /IS is now fixed.

With these new improvements and fixes, there is also a known issue with these updates.

Known Issues

• [General]
  • There are reports that the audio stopped working for some Insiders in recent Beta Channel builds.
• [File Explorer]
  • There are reports that a small set of Insiders with “launch folder windows in a separate process” are unable to open File Explorer after last week’s flight.
  • There is an issue where the command bar items like copy, paste, and empty recycle bin may unexpectedly not be enabled when they should be.

Should You Update?

While considering both the fixes and the new known issues in this flight, we think that it is safe to update to this release since it resolves more problems than it brings. Moreover, the issues in this update are not that serious and would not impact your work (at least not significantly).

Unless your work is dependent upon the system’s audio, we recommend that you install this flight using the given guide below.

How to Install Windows 11 Build 22622.590/ 22621.590

To install this update, you need to be running Windows 11 and subscribed to the Beta channel. If you have enabled Windows updates, you will automatically get a “New features are ready to install” prompt.

If not, follow these steps to install either update:

1. Navigate to the Settings app and then click Windows Update on the left.

2. Here, click Check for updates on the right side of the window.

   

3. Depending on which group you are a part of, you will see either of the following updates downloading automatically:

   Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.22622.590) (KB5017846)

   Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.22621.50) (KB5017846)

   Note: At this point, if Build 22621 is downloading, you can click Download and install under Build 22622 to install the update where the features are enabled by default.

   When the update has been successfully downloaded and installed, click Restart now to finalize the installation.

   

Once the computer restarts, you can verify that the OS has been updated to the build specified by typing in winver in the Run Command box.

Rollback/Remove Windows 11 Insider Preview Update

If you do not wish to keep the installed preview update for some reason, you can always roll back to the previous build of the OS. However, this can only be performed within the next 10 days after installing the new update.

To roll back after 10 days, you will need to apply this trick.

Cleanup After Installing Windows Updates

If you want to save space after installing Windows updates, you can run the following commands one after the other in Command Prompt with administrative privileges:
