Windows 11 Preview Build 22572 Released With Microsoft Family And Clipchamp

After the Patch Tuesday for March 2022 for Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft has now released Windows 11 Preview Build 22572 for Insiders in the Dev channel. This update brings new functions, features, and improvements to the Windows 11 operating system.

This flight introduces 2 new Windows applications, to which you can find below, along with other fixes and changes. However, there are also several problems with Build 22572, which have also been briefly discussed in this post. Let us now continue to see exciting new features on this flight.

New Features in Windows 11 Build 22572

Microsoft Family App

Microsoft Family was originally a web and mobile application, whose function is to give parents more control over when and what their child is doing on the computer. With Build 22572, Microsoft Family is now an inbox application natively installed on the computer.

The application will only be an inbox application on the Home Editions of Windows 11 and can be updated through the Microsoft Store app. However, on the Professional edition of Windows, users can download the app through Settings app >> Accounts >> Family which automatically redirects to Microsoft Store.

You can use this application to do the following:

• Configure parental controls and filter inappropriate content.
• Allow browsing to kid-friendly websites only on Microsoft Edge.
• Control screen time on the Windows computer, Xbox, and on Android devices.
• Receive activity reports.
• Location tracking.

Clipchamp App

Microsoft has also introduced a new app named “Clipchamp.” Clipchamp is an advanced video editing software that can trim and split videos. The tool not only has the basic tools you get in any third-party free video editing software, but also has a timeline feature, which is mostly offered by premium (paid) applications.

The application also comes with a library of videos and audio you can use to edit your videos. It also integrates with OneDrive so you can easily import and export content directly from the cloud.

The application also has Azure-powered text-to-speech capabilities to create voiceovers in more than 70 different languages.

Search Highlights

Although the feature has not been introduced on this flight, Microsoft plans to begin rolling out updates early next week. Search Highlights is a feature that displays trending news around your region in the Search box in the Start Menu.

Not only that, but any news regarding your own organization or content published by them will also be available here. Of course, you will still be able to search for your apps, programs, files, and folders conventionally.

You can control what content you see in the Search highlights through Settings app >> Privacy & Security >> Search Settings and toggling (Show search highlights).

According to Microsoft, this feature will also be coming to Windows 10 on the Release Preview channel.

Other New Features

Other changes have also been made with this flight. Below are the details:

  • The Print Queue flyout has an updated design to align with Windows 11 design principles, allowing you to easily identify your desired print job, see the status, and manage it.
    
  • The icon for Quick Assist has been redesigned.
    
• [Focus]
  • The icon for Notification Center when the “Do not disturb” has been enabled has been updated.
    
• [File Explorer]
  • Using the Shift + Right-click shortcut keys in File Explorer and the Desktop will now open the “Show more options” context menu directly.
• [Narrator]
  • Narrator natural voices are now available for all English languages.
• [Terminal]
  • Windows Terminal is now called “Terminal” in the Start Menu.
• [Settings]
  • WMIC is now available as an optional feature that can be uninstalled or reinstalled via Settings >> Apps > >Optional Features.
  • Switched the touch keyboard icon option under Settings >> Personalization >> Taskbar from being a toggle to now being a drop-down menu where you can select Never, Always, or When no keyboard attached.
    
• [Windows Sandbox]
  • Windows Sandbox now has a new Fluent-style icon.
    
• [Other]
  • The legacy version of Windows Media Player available in Windows Tools has been renamed to “Windows Media Player Legacy.”

Other Improvements and Fixes

Other changes and fixes have also been made with this flight:

• [General]
  • The issue with Enterprise edition devices going through the setup experience (OOBE), where the network add screen was skipped on the first attempt, has been fixed.
  • An issue which caused some Insiders to see a bugcheck with a CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED error in the previous build while trying to do various things, including logging in, opening Outlook, and accessing network shares in File Explorer, has been addressed.
  • An underlying issue that led to audio stutters and touchpad issues in the previous flight has been mitigated.
  • The Explorer.exe crash some insiders were seeing in recent builds when attempting to use Windows Mixed Reality has been fixed.
  • An issue with scroll bars not rendering appropriately on some Win32 applications has been addressed.
  • Another issue where users weren’t hearing the startup sound has been fixed.
  • Images should no longer be backwards when using a lock screen slideshow with an Arabic or Hebrew display language.
• [Taskbar]
  • The issue that caused Explorer.exe to crash if you right-clicked on the Start Menu button or used WIN + X shortcut keys has been addressed.
  • The explorer.exe hang that could have happened in the last few flights related to the visual indicator in the Taskbar when sharing a window in Microsoft Teams has been fixed.
  • Adjusted the sensitivity so that sliding your mouse quickly across the widgets icon on the path to an open flyout or menu will no longer dismiss it.
  • A change has been made to help address a memory leak in the Shell Experience Host when repeatedly opening and closing the Notification Center.
  • Addressed a scenario in which the notification center could not light dismiss if it was opened in addition to certain apps.
  • An underlying issue when the display scaling was greater than 100%, which caused drag and drop in the Taskbar to unexpectedly show it wasn’t available, has been fixed.
• [Tablet-optimized Taskbar]
• NOTE: The following fixes will only show if a tablet-optimized Taskbar is enabled on your device, which is beginning to roll out to Windows Insiders and not yet available for everyone.
  • Touch gestures have been restored on all device types, as we resolved the issue of breaking several new touch gestures announced as part of Build 22557 on non-tablet devices.
  • Improved reliability of Taskbar auto-collapsing after launching the app.
  • Several bugs related to the Taskbar state change when disconnecting or reconnecting your keyboard have been fixed.
  • Positioning issue with the hidden icons button and flyout when using the Arabic or Hebrew display language has been addressed.
• [Start Menu]
  • Improved how the “Pinned” header name is rendered in the Arabic display language.
• [File Explorer]
  • Some improvements have been made to help with context menu invocation performance.
  • Using the Filter option in Quick Access should work for images now.
  • The underlying issue causing the title bar in File Explorer when colored to not visually occupy the full area it was supposed to if you maximized the File Explorer window has been taken care of.
  • An issue where if you have a folder selected in the navigation pane and right-clicked another folder, options like “Open in Windows Terminal” unexpectedly open the first folder that has been addressed.
  • “Pin to Quick Access” is now available in the command bar when a file in “Recent Files” in Quick Access is selected.
• [Input]
  • An issue where clicking hyperlinks in RichTextBlocks wasn’t working when performed with touch or pen has been fixed.
  • An issue where custom mouse pointers can revert to the default Windows one after rebooting has been fixed.
  • An issue where Voice Typing might display “There is a connection issue” when that wasn’t the cause of the error has been addressed.
  • An issue where Voice Typing might not launch after unlocking your PC has been fixed.
  • A touch keyboard crash that could happen on the login screen when there are multiple accounts on the PC has been addressed.
  • An issue that has affected pen sensitivity in recent flights has been mitigated.
  • Fixed a rendering issue, causing the screen to have small freezes on recent flights when trying to ink in certain apps.
  • Some refinements have been made to help improve detection of the pinch to zoom gestures on touchpads.
  • An issue leading to IME toolbar options being unresponsive in some cases for the Chinese (Simplified) IMEs has been addressed.
• [Search]
  • Some work has been done to address a high-hitting search crash.
• [Settings]
  • An issue causing a hang when trying to access Personlaization >> Taskbar >> Taskbar behaviors has been addressed.
  • An issue where the font previews under Personalization >> Fonts might not be visible when a contrast mode was enabled has been addressed.
  • Improved performance when switching between the different views on Apps >> Installed apps.
  • Uninstalling an update via Windows Update >> Update History >> Uninstall Updates should show a confirmation dialog box before it proceeds.
• [Windowing]
  • An acrylic area should no longer get stuck on the screen if you press the WIN + D shortcut keys while interacting with snap layouts at the top of the screen.
  • An issue where if you use snap assist to minimize a window, it might not fill the entire available space has been addressed.
  • A few animated stutters when using 3-finger on screen gestures has been fixed.
  • An Explorer.exe crash that could happen if you attempt to use 3-finger on-screen gestures while no windows are visible on screen has been fixed.
  • The underlying issue, which could impact animation and performance when invoking Task View, has been fixed.
  • The underlying issue that caused you to unexpectedly see an X when trying to rearrange Desktops in Task View in certain scenarios has been fixed.
  • Tweaked logic to help reduce the number of sounds heard when connecting and disconnecting monitors and docks.
  • An issue where windows for minimized apps weren’t launching on the expected monitor upon undocking and redocking has been addressed.
  • The title bar should no longer peek out onto secondary monitors when maximizing certain apps.
  • An issue which caused certain windows to show an unexpected white rectangle poking out from underneath, spanning the top of the window, has been fixed.
  • Updated the new full screen gripper for edge gestures to use acrylic.
• [Narrator]
  • The issue preventing Narrator from reading correctly in the Run dialog in scan mode has been fixed.
  • Narrators in scan mode will now correctly read the error messages in the Error List in Visual Studio.
  • Errors when setting up a PIN in device setup (OOBE) will now be read out by the Narrator.
  • Pitch range for Narrator natural voices have been adjusted to provide more control.
  • The underlying issue which led to the pitch not changing when adjusting Narrator speed in the 0 to 5 and 15 to 20 ranges in Narrator settings has been fixed.
• [Task Manager]
  • Improved visibility of content when a contrast mode is enabled.
  • An issue where critical system processes were unexpectedly displayed as background processes has been addressed.
  • An issue that caused random rows in the process list to be unexpectedly written in black text when using dark mode has been addressed.
  • Right-clicking the Task Manager icon in the system tray should now show the context menu, rather than a blank box.
  • Pressing the Esc key should no longer unexpectedly close the Task Manager.

With these new features, improvements, and fixes, there are also several new known issues we think you should know about before upgrading to it.

Known Issues

• [General]
  • Users running Windows 10 who are trying to upgrade directly to build 22563 or higher in the Dev Channel may encounter an install failure with error code 0x8007007f. To bypass this, please join the Beta Channel, install the Windows 11 build there, and then switch to the Dev Channel to receive the current Dev Channel update.
• [Tablet-optimized Taskbar]
  • The Taskbar doesn’t always automatically collapse after launching an app or tapping outside the expanded Taskbar on 2-in-1 devices.
  • Some areas of the OS are not yet tracking the height of the expanded Taskbar on 2-in-1 devices, so you may see overlapping components, such as Widgets overlapping with the Taskbar.
• [File Explorer]
  • Opening the suggested results shown while entering search terms in File Explorer’s search box may not work.
  • There are some issues regarding icon sizing, visual bugs, and text clipping in the flyout showing OneDrive storage.
• [Widgets]
  • Sometimes when pinning from the Feed, the pinned widget is placed at the top instead of below other pinned widgets. If this happens, this will auto-correct within 30 minutes, moving the recently pinned widget to the expected default location. Or you can sign out of your widgets board and immediately sign back in should that correct the problem.
  • After rearranging widgets in the widgets board, some users experience problems with widgets in the pinned section rendering incorrectly. If this happens, signing out of your widgets board and immediately signing back in should correct the problem.
• [Focus]
  • The Clock app is not yet updated to Windows Focus state when configuring focus sessions within the app.
• [Narrator]
  • Narrator natural voices sound garbled and will not read out text accurately. This happens when doing quick navigation, typing or pitch changes. As a workaround, you can switch back to older voices, such as Microsoft David, Mark or Zira.
• [Live Captions]
  • Certain apps on the full screen (e.g., video players) prevent live captions from being visible.
  • Certain apps positioned near the top of the screen and closed before live captions is opened will relaunch behind the live caption window positioned at the top. Use the system menu (ALT + Spacebar) while the app has focus to move the app’s window further down.
  • The top maximized apps (e.g., title bar window management buttons) cannot be reached with touch, while live captions are positioned at the top.
• [Task Manager]
  • Some tool tips do not accurately display the preferred visual settings when the task manager is configured for dark mode.

How to Install Windows 11 Build 22572

To install this update, you already need to be running Windows 11 and subscribed to the Dev channel. If you have enabled Windows updates, you will automatically get a “New features are ready to install” prompt.

Follow the steps below to upgrade to this build:

1. Navigate to the Settings app and then click Windows Update on the left.
2. Here, click Check for update on the right side of the window.
   
3. You will then see the following updates available under Updates available to download:
   Windows 11 Insider Preview 22572.1 (ni_release)
   Click Download & install in front of it.
   
4. The update will now begin to download and then install. Once complete, click Restart Now.
   

Once the computer restarts, you can verify that the OS has been updated by typing in winver in the Rundialog box.

You can also see the new build number in the watermark in the bottom-right corner of the desktop.

Rollback/Remove Windows 11 Insider Preview Update

If you do not wish to keep the installed preview update for some reason, you can always roll back to the previous build of the OS. However, this can only be performed within the next 10 days after installing the new update.

To roll back after 10 days, you will need to apply this trick.

Cleanup After Installing Windows Updates

If you want to save space after installing Windows updates, you can run the following commands one after the other in Command Prompt with administrative privileges:
